2003 Mardi Gras Pictures

Soileau Courir de Mardi Gras, March 3, 2003

The Soileau Courir de Mardi Gras again attracted a good turnout despite another year with cold weather and sprinkles of rain that began to pick up after the first two stops, when the photographs on this page were taken.  The Mardi Gras danced at the homes they visited to persuade the residents to offer a gift for the community gumbo. soile2.jpg (27482 bytes)
At the first stop, the Mardi Gras were treated to fried sweet potatoes. Visible at the right edge of that photo is a microphone from a Canadian television crew doing a documentary. As the other photos on this page show, Mardi Gras in Soileau is also about sharing friendship with a hug and greeting old acquaintances. The Soileau Mardi Gras is also about preserving the tradition of the Creole Mardi Gras, including the Mardi Gras chant and response, led by McKinley Ceasar Sr., shown with his megaphone.
